Moto Coga
Description: Moto Coga. Barbed spear. Carved from kau (wood), with the tolo ni moto (body of the spear) round in cross-section, and with the ulu ni moto (spearhead) with a pointed mata ni moto (eye of the spearhead; spear-point), and consisting of twelve sets of coga (barbs) made of kau. The largest set of coga is at the base of the ulu ni moto, consisting of five coga. This is followed by the remaining eleven sets of coga, each consisting of six-seven coga, and gradually decreasing in size towards the tip. The tip is conical in shape and approximately 240mm long. The tolo ni moto tapers from the upper area to the lower end of the tolo ni moto. There is lawa ni moto (woven decoration) consisting of finely woven braids of magimagi (coconut sennit) across the middle to the upper areas of the tolo ni moto. A few of the sections of magimagi are arranged and wrapped in a way to form a pattern. Magimagi braids are also wrapped around the base and the top of the larger sets of coga. There are thick chain-like woven braids of magimagi that are methodically and wrapped and knotted, forming a pattern, around the upper area of the tolo ni moto. Dark brown in colour.
