(kiln ash glazed) Among the most distinctive of shapes in Korean ceramics is the maeby?ng. Developed from the Chinese meiping shape, which is characterised by a straight profile, that narrows at the base and has a trumpet shaped mouth (compare with K2398), the Goryeo maeby?ng developed an S-shaped profile in the early twelfth century. With the decline in influence of Chinese forms, Goryeo kilns began to perfect the elegance of their shapes and the S-shape profile became common. This trend subsequent intensified, so the pronounced S-shaped profile, a shape that does not appear among Chinese meiping in the Song dynasty, can be identified as one of the key innovations of the Goryeo potters.
