Kato
Description: Kato. Basket. This is a handwoven kato (basket) made of lau fā (pandanus) and synthetic ribbon. The kato has been woven using the lalaga (weaving) style, and has a round base which extends upwards into a cylindrical-shaped body. The lau fā is a natural light brown in colour and the synthetic ribbon, which has been dyed, features sections that are red, blue and pink in colour. The sides of the kato have strips of red and blue synthetic ribbon overlaid and interwoven into the lau fā, to create intricate geometric mata pēle (patterns) that run diagonally along the sides of the kato in a repetitive manner. There is a single tubular handle that has been sewn into place on the sides of the kato, which is also made of lau fā and has the same red and blue ribbon interwoven with it. Inside the rim of the kato, a pekepeke band of pink and red synthetic ribbon has been sewn, to reinforce the opening and to further decorate the kato. This kato was made in Auckland and purchased at the Niue Island craft exhibition at Freemans Bay Waiatarau Centre, from Emeline Vailahi who is from the village of Avatele in Niue.
