vase
Description: vase, maebyong, stoneware, inlaid celadon, willow and peony pattern with lotus leaves, all inlaid, Punchong ware A maebyong is a vessel with a small mouth, short neck and constricted waist. This example has a typical saucer-shaped mouth and a very pronounced S-shaped curve starting at the shoulder, a trait that began to appear in the first half of the twelfth century and later became a characteristic of the Joeson court. The vase is Inlaid on all sides with willow and lotus pattern with two bands of lotus leaves encircling the base and shoulder. The willow is thought to repel evil, and the lotus is symbolic of purity and fertility and has strong Buddhist associations. It is a delightful example of inlaid ware and could be a transitional ware from the Koryo to the Joeson dynasty. The bottle has been coated with a pale blue grey bunch'ong glaze.( from Korean Gallery label)
