Kato fiofio
Description: Kato fiofio. Decorative basket. This is a lidded kato made from the following materials: lau fā (pandanus leaf) and lau fou (lace bark). The lau fou is dyed. The kato fiofio is cylindrical in form where the diameter is larger than the height of the kato. The main receptacle of the kato portrays a woven interior of natural pale brown lau fā. Some of the pinnules portray speckles of dark brown. A separate exterior has been woven out of a light, off-white shade of lau fā. This also includes a decorative pattern of green, pink, navy and purple dyed lau fou pinnules through the light, off-white woven lau fā. Along the inside of the rim a green dyed, woven band has been attached to finish off the woven exteriors selvedge. The lid of the kato is made of only one woven layer in contrast to its main receptacle. It is made up of a base from light, off-white lau fā. A small loop tag has been attached in the centre of the exterior of the lid. Its patterns have been woven into the surface of the lid. It portrays a checked pattern defined by a navy blue dyed pinnule of lau fou. A circular border around the top is defined by dyed pinnules of lau fou in purple, green and light green. A smaller circle that surrounds the looped tag is defined by a purple dyed pinnule. The sides of the lid portray a twill-style pattern of dyed lau fou pinnules in pink, greens and blues. The rim of the lid has been decorated by an attached woven, serrated component made up of dyed lau fou pinnules in greens and pink. When the lid is placed on the kato, its colourful serrated border known as the pekepeke (type of woven border) features across the centre of the sides of the kato.
