Subject Notes
Sixteen-year-old Donald Brown, was killed on 15 September 1916, the first day of the renewed offensive at the Somme. Roughly one in seven New Zealanders who fought there was killed, and about four in every ten were wounded. Brown's father had died in mid-1912, and at the time he went to war Brown's mother was caring for his two younger brothers and baby sister by herself, family circumstances which seem to have been on his mind. He may have seen in the war opportunity to better his family's future: he allotted 3 shillings a day from his pay to go to his mother and planned to apply for land when he was repatriated.
