Henry Thomas Norton - Letters

documentary heritage
  • Description

Contains photocopied material. Typed transcript (photocopy) of letter to 'My Dear Darling Wife' [Florence Norton] from Harry Norton, 'In the Trenches, France', dated 15 June 1916.

An extract from page 92 of the typed transcript reads as follows:

"I am just writing you this letter in case I have the great honour of giving my Life, for King & Country.

I have made my 'Peace with God' & am ready to meet Him, should He see fit to call me. Dear Heart I have lately lived my life trying to do all the good I can, and I feel very peaceful & happy.

Florrie Chum, you have been a real Angel to me & the best Chum ever a man could possibly have. I want to tell you now that I worshipped the ground you trod, and Oh how I love you my Darling.

... I will never forget how brave you were when I waved to you as the Troop ship left the wharf... What a sacrifice, and how you loved me to let me go because I felt it was my duty to go.

When I sometimes get tired & dispirited that wonderful scene comes before me & I gain courage again. I carry all your letters close to my heart."
