    Original Print. Inscription, The pioneer South Island winemaker Took over a 1918 est Table grape vineyard in 1948 for winemaking. 1982.121.9. Typed inscription on a piece of paper attached to the verso, Nelson sunshine and reflected heat from the stones provide a double ripening for grapes at the Ruby Bay vineyard of Viggo Dufresne (pictured). Red wine from this apparently unpromising soil (last year) won an Industries and Commerce prize.

    Alternative title, Viggo Dufrene, tends his Ruby Bay vines, Nelson, c1968. Exhibition label, In 1948 Viggo Dufresne, of French Huguenot descent, took over an existing vineyard, at Ruby Bay. At first he sold table grapes while establishing classic wine varieties and in 1968 was one of only two licensed grape winemakers in the South Island.
