  • Subject Notes
    George St. John-Biggs was born in England in 1867. Apprenticed to Charles Knight, photographer by appointment to Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Married Kate (Kitty) Quinton, also apprenticed.
    Took a keen interest in developing use of colour in photography in 1908 and became a member of Society of Colour Photographers. During this time he produced Autochrome plates.
    Studio in Ryde, Isle of Wight. Emigrated to W. Australia in 1911 with wife Kitty and 3 daughters; 1921 opened "Falk" Studio in Symonds St. Later moved to Karangahape Rd, studio known as St. John-Biggs Studios - child studies, bridal work, Vice-Regal patronage. Kitty and her daughters carried on the business from St John-Biggs' death until 1942, when it was taken over by Amy Harper.
