Israel Wendel, founder of Wendel & Co was born in Alsace Lorraine. He planted a vinyard in Greys Avenue, Auckland, in 1872. Five years later he won a prize for his Quinine Grape Wine at the Sydney International Exhibition. Following Wendel's death his daughter Brunetta (Mrs Trevithick) took over the family wine business.
