    Collection consists primarily of interior views of G. Fowlds store in the Victoria Arcade building, Auckland, recording display cabinets and other displays including footwear, millinery and juvenile departments. One view is dated from the establishment of the firm in 1898. The other views appear to be of a later period in the 1920s.

    The photographs of Hugh Wrights store in Queen Street, Auckland, are exterior views showing facade and window displays.

    George Fowlds Ltd. menswear store on corner of Queen Street and Fort Street Auckland, in Victoria Arcade building. Founded in 1888 the shop was one of the leading menswear stores in Auckland and prospered for nearly 40 years.

    Hugh Wright Ltd. Queen Street Auckland, menswear retailer, founded in 1904 by tailor Hugh Wright and remained in family hands until it entered into receivership September 2002. By this time the firm had 19 stores. The company had 9 Auckland stores, 3 in Wellington, 2 in Christchurch and outlets in Hamilton, Rotorua, Palmerston North and Tauranga.
