The Robert McDougall Art Gallery officially opened in 1932. The building was designed by Gisbourne architect Edward Armstrong, who won the competition for its design.
This photograph was taken before the landscaping had been completed.
The Christchurch Art Gallery replaced the Robert McDougall Art Gallery in 2002.
