The house was originally built in 1845-6 for Captain Ninnis, who was the mine manager on Kawau Island. Governor Grey bought the island in 1862 and added two more wings to the house. Eliza Thomson bought the island in 1888 and added the verandas. Mansion House and the grounds are now part of the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park.
