Miss M.T. Talbot was the grand daughter of Fox Talbot. The acquisition material came via Douglas Richardson at the request of Gilbert Archey in October 1937, arriving in December 1937.
Subject Notes
John Moffat was born in Aberdeen but the family moved to Edinburgh in 1826. He started work as a portrait engraver and crayon & chalk portraitist. He took up photography as an amatuer from about 1850 and became professional in 1853. His studio was in Princes Street, Edinburgh where the business remained for over 100 years. By 1887 it was employing 20 photographic assistants.
William Henry Fox Talbot, 1800-1877, scholar,scientist and photographic pioneer was the discoverer of the negative positive process of photography in the late 1830s. By 1841 he had invented and patented the calotype process. He was also the author and publisher of the first book to use photographs as illustrations.
