    John McLean was born in Hastings in 1871. He was a farmer and ornithologist, farming the Waikohu Station in Poverty Bay. He kept detailed records of birds and made a number of photographs of nests and local country. He belonged to many ornithological and related societies and published several papers on the bird life of Poverty Bay. He drowned in 1918 attempting to cross the flooded Waipaoa River.

    John McLean's ornithological notebooks for the period 1906-12 are held by the Alexander Turnbull Library.

    The Auckland War Memorial Museum holds McLean's egg collection in the Land Vertebrates Department.
