documentary heritage
  • Other Name

Journal of James Macrae, Botanist--Spine title. (Alternate title)

  • Description

"This volume is a transcription of the original manuscript journal kept by Scottish botanist James Macrae when he traveled with Lord Byron on H.M.S. Blonde during its 1824-1825 voyage from Britain to the Hawaiian Islands. A primary purpose of the expedition was to return to bodies of King Kamehameha II (Liholiho) and Queen Kamāmalu, both of whom had died of measles during a diplomatic visit to Britain.

Macrae also brought plants to the Hawaiian Islands and made observations wherever he went. After almost three months in the islands, the Blonde returned to Britain and Macrae's journal was given to the Royal Horticultural Society. Extracts were published in 1922, but a complete transcription of the journal from the time Macrae spent in the Hawaiian Islands has not previously been available."--Back cover

Scottish gardener and botanist who was employed by the Botanic Garden at St. Vincent (c. 1823). He joined the voyage of HMS Blonde (1824-1825) as a collector for the Horticultural Society of London, accompanying the ship's own naturalist A. Bloxam, and visited Hawaii, Malden Island (Kiribati), the Galapagos lslands, Chile and Brazil. The British warship was commanded by Captain George Anson Byron, cousin to the recently deceased poet Lord (George) Byron, and had an unusual mission, to return the remains of the king and queen of Hawaii who had died of measles during a visit to Britain. On his return, Macrae was appointed Superintendent (1827-1830) of the Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya in Sri Lanka, where he specialised in collecting orchids, and held the post until his death a few years later. Material deposited with the Horticultural Society of London was purchased by BM (1856).
