247-259 Hepburn Road, Glendene, Auckland : S56 interim and final report

documentary heritage
  • Description

"A residential subdivision at 247-259 Hepburn Road, Glendene, Auckland has been proposed, providing 84 lots. The coastal margins are to be vested for the purpose of a Local Esplanade Reserve, linking Laurieston Park to the Hepburn Esplanade Reserve. [...]

An archaeological assessment was commissioned by Peter Reaburn of Cato Bolam on behalf of the Estates of AM Culav & P Culav & EM DA PJ Culav to assess the effects of the proposed work on archaeological values. This established that there were eight recorded archaeological sites within the property. These sites included six shell midden sites, a historic house, and a brickworks. All bar one of these sites are to be avoided. The kiln floor of the Malam brickworks is situated within the marginal strip and will therefore not be part of the property development, although areas further inland where associated structures and the clay workings existed were identified as likely to be impacted. A s56 Authority application was made in order to establish the type and extent of archaeological materials that might be present relating to the Malam brickworks within those areas."--Introduction.
