    He toi nuku, he toi rangi: this literally translates as 'artistic excellence of the Earth and Sky', and has been used as part of the title of this book because ot encapsulates much of Cliff's philosophy, thinking and practice.

    The duality of toi nuku and toi rangi can be understood in terms of Cliff's focus on technique, innovation, and the use of materials in his art-making practice (he toi nuku), as well as the function, narrative, tikanga and belief system sitting within the artwork itself and the art-making process (he toi rangi). Toi nuku is about ensuring that the art is grounded within the ethic, experience and tikanga of the people. Toi rangi is about pushing the boundaries, about innovation and exploration, and striving toward the heights of excellence.--Title page verso. Hardcover is limited edition.
