In the first section the meagre text belies the title's promise but, as contemporary judgment put without irony, is presented in a 'nice, readable, chatty manner' (New Zealand Times 5 Aug. 1879). Kawau is inadequately described and much of the character of Grey's occupation is equally neglected.

There is a little more substance in the description of a journey comprising the second part: the Bay of Islands (mostly the Kororareka period of Russell with a little on Paihia and Waitangi), Kawakawa, Maori schools, Whangaroa, Monganui, Ohaeawai, Hokianga, Pakaraka, etc.--Bagnall 2360 Hocken p. 318 Ownership inscription, copy 1: S.E. Shrimski [i.e. Shrimpski] Esq. M.H.R. with Sir G. Grey's regards.
