Narrative of a voyage to New Zealand, performed in the years 1814 and 1815, in company with the Rev. Samuel Marsden, Principal Chaplain of New South Wales

documentary heritage
  • Other Name

Nicholas's voyage to New Zealand with plates in two volumes (Alternate title)

  • Description

"Nicholas, a New South Wales settler of two years standing, accompanied Marsden on his historic mission to the Bay of Islands in Dec. 1814 and was his close companion for the duration of their stay, to the end of Feb. 1815. The two men landed at the North Cape from the Active on the return voyage.

Nicholas's description, of the crowded days, the meetings with the leading chiefs, the short journeys, with his full impressions of Maori culture are of the greatest value. His narrative, told in standard 18th century prose, is a useful parallel to the more volatile but succinct and direct record kept by Marsden. Nickolas's retelling of the Boyd massacre, as related by the leaded "George", is the first account from the Maori standpoint.

P.[327]-353 contain a Maori-English vocabulary and sentences, doubtless supplied by Kendall, with some Tongan parallels. The sentences are the same as those in A korao no New Zealand (1815) but the vocabulary is longer that that in the earlier work. The appendices contain a section from Collins' history of New South Wales dealing with Tiki and Huru, the Maoris taken to Norfolk Island; extracts from Turnbull's A voyage round the world in the years 1800? (1813) on Te Pehi and George Bruce and, finally, Marsden's Memoirs of Duaterra " written for the C.M.S." - Bagnall, 4268
