    The Torea bird was believed to be the messenger of the gods and conveyed warnings of coming good and evil to mortals'--Handwritten on the front page of Vol.3 no.45 (14 Nov 1896).
    Bound into the back of the first volume are the Census for Rarotonga as at 1 June 1895 and a copy of the colony accounts.
    Included reporting from other Pacific Islands, e.g. Honolulu, Tahiti & Aitutaki, letters to the editor and shipping news. Themes discussed were land alienation and politics - the French invasion of Tahiti for example.

    Includes advertising and public notices from the Cook Islands Parliament and Rarotonga Council. Issues of Vol.1 1895, handwritten and copied; some of the copies of the Christmas supplement for 1895 are printed on mulberry paper (Tapa). Title from caption. Some issues lack designation. Some issues accompanied by supplements. A bilingual publication, though from 20 Nov 1897 onward the paper was issued (cyclostyled) from Avatiu, and written wholly in English.
