  • Description

"The Samoa of the late 19th century presented Dr. Augustin Kramer with a unique opportunity to record the days of old. His methodical approach, extensive research, massive detail, seemingly inexhaustible cross-references and skilfully woven German constructions, resulted in the publication in 1902-03 of Die Samoa Inseln, which is widely regarded as a classic ethnological and ethnographic work.

Presented in two volumes, Kramer defines each concept in such a way that "ethnology seeks to fathom the depth of the soul of a people, its spiritual and intellectual property, the foundation and course of religion, history and forms of government based on language, myths, legends and traditions. Ethnography on the other hand is concerned with the manifestations and external aspects such as anthropology, sociology and industry based on geography and the natural sciences." More succinctly, Volume I covers the constitution, pedigrees and traditions of Samoa; Volume II is its material culture."--book jacket.

  • Subject Notes
TofΓ Maunu Sauni (c. 1820s-1900s) held the Samoan orator chief title of Sauni for Tufulele, Upolu, Samoa, by the 1890s. He was the chief Samoan advisor to German ethnologist Dr Augustin Kraemer in Kraemer's study of Samoa, The Samoan Islands (Vols 1-2, 1901 & 1903). The German medical doctor turned ethnologist regarded Sauni as his 'best teacher' and 'unshakable friend.' According to Kraemer, Sauni was 'generally looked upon by other Samoans as one of the wisest men among them.'(1)--The Devil's Handwriting: Pre-Coloniality and the German State in Quingdao, Samoa, and Southwest Africa (pp. 310-311). George Steinmetz.
Augustin Friedrich Kraemer or KrΣmer (27 August 1865 - 11 November 1941) was a German naturalist and ethnographer. Augustin Kraemer was a Navy surgeon who worked in the Polynesia in 1893-95 and 1897-99.
