Ward, John Patrick, 1847?-1914
Australian, born in Sydney in 1847. Arrived in New Zealand in 1864. Father was a private in HM 28th Regiment. Fought in the New Zealand Wars from 1860-1872. Saw service with Major von Tempsty and Captain Roberts. Involved in many Major battles including Akotuku, Te Putahi, Otapawa, Waikato, Kakaramea, Ngatapa and the `Crow's Nest'. Worked as a goldminer for a time. Was in the company of Te Whiti and Tohu, from their arrival in Christchurch, April 1882 until their return to Parihaka in March 1883, prior to their imprisonment. Published an account of his time with Te Whiti and Tohu in 1882-1883 in Nelson; wrote to Alexander Turnbull about the publication in 1907. After he retired from military life he took up the role as manager of Lake House in Waikaremoana. Daughter Mrs McIver lived in Napier in 1914. See NZ National Bibliography Part 2 p 1088 / Bagnall.
