This publication describes and illustrates "examples from many great collections, including specimens gathered during Cook's voyages, and others from the museum of Frederic V of Denmark, and the collection of Count A.G. Molke, who had some of the finest shells in Europe, including many from the famous Seba collection. Many of the plates are heightened in varnish, which mimics the reflective surface of mother of pearl. The set includes the final, rare twelfth volume published in 1829. Only ten volumes were planned, indeed, the title of volume 10 reads "zehnter and letzter Band"."--Sothebys.com (accessed 25/2/2015)
  • Public Access Text

The work includes hand-coloured illustrations on numbered plates. Some plates signed by A.F. Happe. "Fortgesetzet durch Johan Hieronymus Chemnitz," Bd. 4-11." A twelfth final volume was published in 1829. AWMM Library holds only vols. 1-11. AWMM copy: Rebound recently in full leather boards. Spine title: Martini & Chemnintz.

"The 5th volume of this large and rare iconography on shells is of particular interest as it describes and portrays many shells from New Zealand and some from Australia collected during Cook's voyages into the Pacific."--Taken from listing on Abebooks.com (accessed 25/2/2015)

  • Subject Notes
Friedrich Heinrich Wilhelm Martini (1729-1780) was a German physician and conchologist, who practised in Hamburg. He began Neues systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet in 1769 but died two years after the publication of the third volume. His work was continued by Johann Hieronymus Chemnitz (1730-1800), a German clergyman and a conchologist, who added eight volumes between 1779 and 1795.
