    Shield

    Masai shield from Kenya. Made from buffalo hide and wood. A large oval shape with pointed tips shield made from animal hide. The edges of the shield have a wooden frame that is secured to the shield with thin strips of hide that have been coloured red. The obverse of the shield is pigment coloured a base white and has designs in blue and red of geometric bands running down the shield, and a circle at each side, at the centre is an anthropomorphic figure in white. Running vertically down the shield is 2 lines of stitching with hide which supports a wooden beam and handle on the reverse. The hide on the reverse is rough textured and un-designed
