Ili

human history
  • Other Name

    Fan (English)

  • Description

Ili. Fan. Made by Sofima Niusila Iasona. Ili are made in different shapes and sizes, the materials used to make them, as well as any embellishments, vary from natural to synthetic and/or a combination of the two. Made from launiu (coconut leaf), this ili is woven in a tū (spade) shape, with three points at the top as opposed to one. There are three different weaving techniques and patterns apparent on either side of the ili.

The kau (handle) is cylindrical in shape and made from woven light brown kaulama (mature coconut leaf) and black dyed laufala (pandanus leaf) which have been woven into patterns. At the base of the kau there is a wooden rectangular protrusion that is possibly an extension.
