'Ofu

human history
  • Other Name

    Dress (English)

  • Description

'Ofu. Dress. This is an 'ofu made entirely from fau (type of hibiscus). The bodice section has been formed by knotting the warp lengths together to portray a net-like fabric. The knotting method ceases near the waist area where the remaining lengths of the warp have been left loose and fibrous forming the titi (skirt) area. The fau has been dyed red. The same process of technique has been applied to the shoulder straps which have been knotted as part of the bodice.

Small, fibrous rosa (embellished rosettes) of the same material type but displaying colours of purple, neutral and green have been used to embellish areas of the bodice and the shoulder straps. There is no opening on the 'ofu for fitting, portraying the entire garment as seamless.
