Robert Gibb, born in Cupar, Fife, Scotland in 1843 came to New Zealand aboard the Shooting Star in 1859. At the time of his enlistment with the Forest Rangers (No 1 Company Forest Rangers - Jackson's Company), at the age of 19, his occupation was recorded as "blacksmith". 1085 Private Robert Gibb was sworn in by Ensign Charles Westrupp and served with the Forest Rangers from 30 November 1863-30 November 1864.
