    Medal awarded to 520 Private James Henry Escott, 2nd NZMR, 3 Coy.

    silver medal; four bars; plain straight swivelling suspender; with ribbon

    obverse: crowned and veiled head of Queen Victoria and legend VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX

    reverse: Britannia with a flag in her left hand and holding out a laurel wreath in her right towards an advancing party of soldiers; in the background are two warships; below the wreath, in two lines: 1899-1900 in relief; around top: SOUTH AFRICA

    Four bars: SOUTH AFRICA 1901 / ORANGE FREE STATE / JOHANNESBUG / CAPE COLONY

    ribbon: red with two dark blue stripes and a broad orange central stripe
