Growing amongst tall grasses and other weedy herbs under stunted totara (Podocarpus totara var. totara) trees on side of creek. Not fertile - probably arose from discard rhizomes washed down stream during floods. Not seen further upstream though this species is cultivated at the nearby Auckland Botanic Gardens. Plants rhizomatous, widely creeping, rhizomes at soil surface, fronds 1-, 2- 3-pinnate, somewhat fleshy, very brittle, fragrant (with the typical 'athyrioid pong' (think of fresh crushed Cystopteris fragilis). Fronds up to 1 m tall.
