      Small tree with trunk dividing into 3 at 1.25m. Many branched + twiggy, although some dead branches, lichen covered. Ht ca 4 1/2 m. Old bark mid-brown, peeling in strips. Young wood grey - shiny, lenticellate. V. sharp spikes up to 5 1/2 cm long, along new branches - red-tipped. Leaves emerging mid-light green, soft, semi-glossy upper with fine silver hairs, underside paler, more hairs. Leaves emerge quite furled, vein indented. Margins irreg. serrate. Buds + lvs emerge from deep pink bracts. Flowers white, 5 cupped petals, yellowy-green nectary. Petal margins ruffled - opening flat to [2-3] cm. Outspread white stamens pinky-fawn anthers to brown. Scented. On upright cpd corymb.
      NW opening in open forest sitn. Mostly sunny, sheltered basin. Canopy of adj. ash beginning to encroach.
