Field Collection Notes
Both Asplenium hookerianum and A. gracillimum (AK381300) were growing together directly below and around the fallen straight truncked pohutukawa which rooted and formed a walkable bridge over a deep very narrow conglomerate rock ephemeral stream, which runs down to beach Valley Rd (where there are still natural king fern growing on vertical banks). The vegitation is predominately virgin Dysoxylum, Vitex, Corynocarpus, Metrosideros excelsa, Pouteria. One of many valley's in Piha that's virgin and healthy because they were too steep and narrow to do anything with and when the fires swept through they went over the top. This been due to the narrowness and that no Kunzea or Leptospermum were growing amongst the trees. Both ferns are only on the vertical sides. The associated spp. are: Blechnum membranaceum, Blechnum filleforme, Pteris saxatilis and nikau. 30/40 plants of the A. hookerianum present as far as 3m from the pohutukawa - none beyond.
