New Zealand was involved in the United Nations General Assembly negotiations held in Paris from September 1948. These culminated in the adoption of the UDHR that December. Ann Newlands and Colin Aikman presented New Zealand's input to the declaration. They insisted that economic, social and cultural rights were as important as civil and political rights.
