Mickle, Alice: [Collection of WWII ephemera]

documentary heritage
  • Description

A collection of postcards and greeting cards, mostly compiled during the First World War. Some are blank, while the rest are addressed to "Mrs Mickle". Box 1 -- Mostly WWI material (postcards, greeting cards) sent to Alice and Cecil Mickle, by soldiers serving in the war. Box 2 -- All other postcards and greeting cards, dating from the early 20th century.

Many postcards in the collection have been sent to Mrs Mickle from her friend, Sidney Clifford Oxley (signed "Sid"), a Driver in the N.Z.E.F. The information in these postcards reveals that Sidney was a patient at the New Zealand General Hospital in Brockenhurst, England (see EPH-2013-1-37 and EPH-2013-1-68 for examples).

Mrs Alice Mickle (mother of Arthur C.D.F. Mickle), the wife of a prominent local Birkenhead doctor, was an active supporter of servicemen during the First World War. Her obituary notes that she sent gift parcels, initially to soldiers from Birkenhead, whom she knew personally, but later to a much wider group. She kept a souvenir album with photographs, letters and ephemera from some of the recipients of her gifts, which included easy chairs and games for those in hospitals. Her work was acknowledged by the NZ Minister of Defence, J.D. Allen and the Prime Minister, William Massey. She continued her good work during the influenza epidemic, delivering baskets of food and parcels of clothing to those who needed help.
