Ein Platz in der Sonne

documentary heritage
  • Description

Flyer produced during the First World War. Known as a "Balloon Pamphlet", these flyers (also known as leaflets or pamphlets) were dropped over enemy lines via the air, with the intention of demoralising the German soldiers in the trenches. Recto: Black and white illustration of a skull like sun, casting a dark shadow over a cemetery of crosses. Text in German: "By Balloon. Durch Luftballon. Ein Platz in der Sonne (A place in the sun).

Eure herricher fordern einen Platz in der Sonne; aber wo werdet Ihr Euren Platz finden? Translation "[Your rulers demand a place in the sun, but where will you find your place?]". A.P. 35. By Balloon - Durch Luftballon.

The British developed an alternative method of aerial delivery. A. Fleming invented the unmanned leaflet balloon in 1917, and these were used extensively in the latter part of the War, with over 48,000 units produced. The hydrogen balloon would drift over no-man's land to land in the enemy trenches. [Source: Wikipedia]
