A.P. 76. By Balloon. Durch Luftballon.

documentary heritage
  • Description

Flyer produced during the First World War. Known as a "Balloon Pamphlet", these flyers (also known as leaflets or pamphlets) were dropped by the Allies over enemy lines via the air, with the intention of demoralising the German soldiers in the trenches. Text in German details the failures of Germany and the poor conditions back home. Recto: "Zur Entlastung der U-Boot-Mannschaften." Verso: text continues in German.

The British developed an alternative method of aerial delivery. A. Fleming invented the unmanned leaflet balloon in 1917, and these were used extensively in the latter part of the War, with over 48,000 units produced. The hydrogen balloon would drift over no-man's land to land in the enemy trenches. [Source: Wikipedia]
