Heute sind sie daran - Morgen komme ich!

documentary heritage
  • Description

Flyer produced during the First World War. Known as a "Balloon Pamphlet", these flyers (also known as leaflets or pamphlets) were dropped over enemy lines via the air, with the intention of demoralising the German soldiers in the trenches. Recto: Black and white illustration depicting a large skeleton and soldiers walking through its mouth, falling into a pit. A man holds a whip, urging them on. In his jacket is a piece of paper bearing the words: "Kammerherr v. Ben-Pinnow.

Kreigswucher.". Another man brandishes leaflets that read "Daimler; Actien; Kriegsgewinn". Text in German reads "Heute sind sie daran - Morgen komme ich!". Translates to "Today it's your turn - tomorrow will be mine!".

The British developed an alternative method of aerial delivery. A. Fleming invented the unmanned leaflet balloon in 1917, and these were used extensively in the latter part of the War, with over 48,000 units produced. The hydrogen balloon would drift over no-man's land to land in the enemy trenches. [Source: Wikipedia]
