A model of a single hull outrigger canoe. This vaka ama is designed for a single occupant. All components of this vaka ama are carved from wood, brown in colour, and lashed together with pulu (coconut sennit). The tino vaka (hull) is carved from what may possibly be moota wood. Attached to cover the tino vaka is a carved puke (combined prow and stern cover component) which is lashed securely with pulu at several points along the length and sides to the tino vaka underneath. A small seat is inserted in the interior of the tino vaka. Decorative incised lines are applied to the surface of the wooden puke. At each end of the hull a single fua pule (cowrie shell) is attached with pulu. Two wooden tau toko (crossbooms) extend out from the tino vaka, one of which is broken; three tutuki (wooden stakes) are tied to each of these tau toko and connect to a hama (outrigger) of lightweight wood. Some fibre twine is tied loosely around the hama. Two model fohe (paddles) are placed in the interior of the tino vaka.WāhiNiueAccession Number1931.580Rā Tāpiringa16 Nov 1931Tohu Tuakiri Kē16857.1 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Vaka, 1931.580, 16857.1, Photographed by Daan Hoffmann,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1931.580, 16857.1Takenga ā-AhureaNiueanKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiNiueRāPre 1931Tikanga Waihangacarved drilled lashedWaitohu/māka16857.1 (handwritten) NIUE H.G.
