Throwing stone. This small maka tau is made from maka uli (black stone or basalt) and would have been used in war as a throwing weapon. When used during combat, it would be thrown at the enemy from as far away a distance as four meters. This maka tau is ovoid and slightly egg shaped with flattened sides. It is of a dark grey or black colour, with some brown speckles. Its exterior surface is smooth and roughly polished but textured with small markings and abrasions over its entire surface from the hammer-dressing that would have been performed to shape the rock. The maka tau was often used as a defending weapon in combat and if thrown correctly, could do real damage and even cause death.WāhiNiueAccession Number1931.580Rā Tāpiringa16 Nov 1931Tohu Tuakiri Kē16862.2 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Maka tau, 1931.580, 16862.2, Photographed by Richard Ng,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1931.580, 16862.2Takenga ā-AhureaNiueanKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiNiueRāPre 1931Tikanga WaihangaHammered beaten groundWaitohu/mākapres; NIUE; 16862.2 (handwritten) NIUE; HG; Cornwall (label, stick on/label)Pāohobasalt/basic igneous rock/igneous rock/rock/inorganic materialRaraunga Ine65mm44mm38mmHuinga KaupapaWarriors/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Stonework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūStone, ProjectileArmament T&E, WeaponTools & Equipment for Science & TechnologyWhakahounga o Mua16 Sep 2019 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
