Throwing club

human history
  • Kupu whakaahua

This throwing club is modelled after the throwing club design of the i-ula, which is Fijian in origin. This example was made in Niue using kieto (ebony) which is a highly sought-after hardwood. The club is carved with a fluted, bulbous head that flares out from a long cylindrical shaft which is gripped in the hand. The club is dark in colour and has a shiny surface treatment although there is surface wear.
