Kuputuhi e Wātea Tūmatanui ana
Worn primarily by tulafale or talking chiefs, ‘ula fala may today be worn by any persons of status. They are made from pandanus fruit keys, which range in colour from yellow to red. Today the keys are usually painted a dark red, perhaps enhancing the prestige of these necklaces by linking them to Polynesian regard for the colour of red which carries connotations of sacredness, high rank and value.
