Soft woven basket. This is a kato (basket) made from lau niu (coconut leaf). A lau niu has been obtained to construct this kato. The lau niu has been split down the centre of the kāniu (midrib). The pinnules have been woven together from the kāniu point to form the mass of the Kato. To finish off the kato, the ends of the pinnules have been braided together to form the base. The end of the thick braid has been tied off with a thin strand of lau fā (pandanus leaf) and then cut leaving a short selvedge. A loose pinnule can be seen woven into the side of the kato. The fibrous depth of the kāniu can be seen from where it has been split and forms the rim of the kato. The pinnules have dried over time and portray an off-white and neutral colour. The rim is oval and the sides curve in to form the base. This was made in New Zealand, Auckland from lau niu that was imported from Niue.WāhiAuckland/New Zealand NiueAccession Number1989.20Rā Tāpiringa24 Jan 1989Tohu Tuakiri Kē52990 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Kato molū, 1989.20, 52990, Photographed by Richard Ng,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1989.20, 52990Takenga ā-AhureaNiueanKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiAuckland/New Zealand NiueRāPre 1989Tikanga Waihangawoven handmade handwovenWaitohu/māka52990; NIUE (handwritten) 52990; NIUE (label, stick on/label)Pāoho[coconut leaf]/leaf (plant material)/plant materialRaraunga Ine290mm200mm200mmHuinga KaupapaBasketry/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Fibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūBasketContainerDistribution & Transportation ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua24 Sep 2019 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
