This is a string instrument. The forked end of the stem is placed over a person’s mouth and the opposite end is held by hand. The bow is made of wood. It is rectangular and long in length with a filed fish tail at one end. This end would be placed over the mouth. The surface consists of two 'ohe (bamboo) frets on either end where four nylon strings are pulled over through perforations on the reverse of the bow. The bow is curved as a result of the taught strings. The colour of the wood is a reddish tone and light to handle. Like the hollow of a guitar, the hollow of the players’ mouth is used to control the sounds made by the picking of the strings.WāhiHawaii/United States of AmericaAccession Number1989.64Rā Tāpiringa17 Apr 1989Tohu Tuakiri Kē53113 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Ukeke, 1989.64, 53113, Photographed by Denise Baynham,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira, 1989.64, 53113Takenga ā-AhureaHawaiianKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiHawaii/United States of AmericaRāPre 1989Pāohowood/plant materialRaraunga Ine453 x 27 x 30mmHuinga KaupapaMusical Instruments/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūMusical InstrumentsMusical T&E06 Tools & Equipment for CommunicationWhakahounga o Mua16 Sep 2022 Tūemi e whai hononga Ngā hua o DigitalNZ Page 6 Advertisements Column 4 (Mataura Ensign 6-5-1911) National Library of New Zealand Page 1 Advertisements Column 7 (Hawke's Bay Herald, 01 December 1897) National Library of New Zealand Cordophones - The Coming of the Maori Victoria University of Wellington Page 1 Advertisements Column 7 (Hawke's Bay Herald, 24 November 1897) National Library of New Zealand The Rarity of Stringed Instruments is accounted — for by the Rarity of the Bow - Maori and Polynesian: their origin, history and culture Victoria University of Wellington Mea e whai hononga ai E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
