Thigh drum. This drum is made from a coconut shell with a cover of skin from the kala (unicorn fish) which is secured with plant fibre lashing coloured a golden yellow with ‘olena (turmeric). The same fibre cordage is used for two long braided ties as well as the incorporated netting. The pūniu would be tied to the thigh of the kumu hula to beat with one hand while performing a beat with an ipu (gourd) in the other. The coconut shell sits on a ring-shaped buffer that is wrapped in kapa (bark cloth) providing a stable base for the drum. The kapa and the shark skin cover are natural in colour, while the coconut shell is dark brown in colour.WāhiHawaii/United States of AmericaAccession Number1989.64Rā Tāpiringa17 Apr 1989Tohu Tuakiri Kē53114 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Pūniu, 1989.64, 53114, Photographed by Denise Baynham,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira, 1989.64, 53114Takenga ā-AhureaHawaiianKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiHawaii/United States of AmericaRāPre 1989Tikanga Waihangaplaited polishedWaitohu/māka53114 (handwritten)Pāohobark clothcoconut shell/shell (plant material)/plant materialfibreshark/skin/animal materialbark clothcoconut shell/shell (plant material)/plant materialfish/skin/animal materialRaraunga Ine100 x x 105mm108mm129mm109mmHuinga KaupapaMusical Instruments/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūDrumInstrument, PercussionMusical InstrumentMusical T&ETools & Equipment for Communication DrumInstrument, PercussionMusical InstrumentsMusical T&E06 Tools & Equipment for Communication 211.251 Instruments which have only one usable membrane211.25 Instruments in which the body is conical-shaped211.2 Instruments in which the body is tubular211 Directly struck membranophones21 Struck membranophones2 MembranophonesWhakahounga o Mua31 Jul 2023 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
