Kiekie are waist ornaments which are worn by females in Tonga as part of their formal wear. They are also worn by school girls and boys in Tonga as part of their school uniform. Kiekie are traditionally made from natural materials which are sourced locally in Tonga or in villages. However, kiekie can be made from a combination of synthetic and natural materials, or entirely from synthetic material. This kiekie is made from fau and pueki shells. Fau strips are plaited into a waistband, white and brown pueki shells are strung onto strips of fau and knotted at the ends. These strips are attached along the length of the waistband, thus creating a kiekie.Wāhi[Tonga]/PacificAccession Number1989.69Rā Tāpiringa16 Apr 1989Tohu Tuakiri Kē53182 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete ornament, waist, 1989.69, 53182, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1989.69, 53182Takenga ā-AhureaTonganKaiwaihanga Matua not known (Maker)Wāhi[Tonga]/PacificRāUnknownTikanga Waihangaplaited woven shell work hand knottedWānot knownWaitohu/māka53182 ?
