This is a decorative model of a reeree (sword). It is made of kanni (coconut palm wood), natural and dried ira (pandanus leaf), noko (coconut midrib), kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage), wi ni bakoa (shark teeth) and the claws of waro (stormapod; sea mantis). The long, tapered, cylindrical structure is made of kanni (coconut palm wood). Ira is presented in its dark brown natural colour and pale yellow dried state. It has been used to form a decorative woven encasment portraying a checked pattern. The sides feature a pattern beginning with the bone claws of waro, four wii ni bakoa, another claw of waro, three wii ni bakoa, another claw of waro, two wii ni bakoa and finally a coxa (a base component of waro leg). The bone claws of the waro are barbed with curved points. They're naturally off-white in colour. However some of the points have fractured. The coxa show a serrated, barbed edge and are also a natural off-white colour. Perforations have been drilled into the waro parts and wii ni bakoa. The parts have been positioned along the rod between two pinnules of noko. A fine two-ply strand of kora has been threaded through the perforations and used to lash down the parts of the noko and across the rod creating a parallel pattern of waro parts and wi ni bakoa. The pointed tip of the ree ree shows where the ira has become loose.WāhiKiribatiAccession Number1986.105Rā TāpiringaMay 1986Tohu Tuakiri Kē52054 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te reeree; 1986.105; 52054; Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1986.105, 52054Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiKiribatiRāPre 1930sTikanga Waihangacarved drilled plaited woven lashed [handmade]Waitohu/māka52054 (handwritten)Pāohosennit/cord (fiber product)pandanus (leaf)/leaf (plant material)/plant materialcoconut (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibreclaw/animal materialfish/bonewire/inorganic materialRaraunga Ine715mm50mmHuinga KaupapaWarfare/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Weaving/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūAccessory, DanceDance ArtefactsCeremonial ArtefactsCommunication ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua05 Dec 2018 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
