Ei consists of two types of pupu (shells) raroara, cream coloured (Melampus flavus) and small chestnut-coloured pupu (Melampus casteneus). The pupu raroara are bored and appear to be arbitrarily arranged, some in larger groups of darker coloured pupu interspersed with smaller groups of cream coloured raroara.
