This is a mat made from banana leaf fibres that have been treated, flattened then stitched together. The natural fiber appears to be that of a large dried leaf form that has been laid vertically to form a cover and then made into two layers. A thick stitch runs across the top and bottom of the rectangular shaped rain shelter. The fibre material is a pale yellow in colour, with some fibrous areas and dark spots dappled throughout. It has been folded in half horizontally for storage. Then rolled into a bundle. Fold marks have contributed to the splitting in some areas down the mat.WāhiGilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1982.63Rā Tāpiringa02 Mar 1982Tohu Tuakiri Kē49965 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Mat, 1982.63, 49965, Photographed by Andrew Hales, digital,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1982.63, 49965Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiGilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1982Tikanga Waihangasewn [handmade]Waitohu/māka40965 GILBERT IS.
