    Adze, Hafted (English)

  • Kupu whakaahua

Toki. Hafted adze. Possibly produced as a tourist souvenir. Top of the haft carved into a snake head with open mouth and fangs bared. A toki (adze) of toka kerekere (black basalt) attached to the opposite end of the top of the haft and lashed into place with puru akari (coconut sennit) in an iri taki toru (3-ply braid) technique. Mid section of the carved wooden handle is carved in a variety of motifs and geometric shapes. Lashing is natural in colour.

Wooden haft is brown in colour.
