This is a hand held iriba. It consists of four material components: Te noko (coconut midrib), te kakoko (pinnules of the young, white and central leaf of the coconut tree), te ira (pandanus leaf) and burae ni moa (feathers). The central area of te iriba is structured with a series of te kakoko that extend from the centre. Dyed pinnules of the same type in dark brown and mid tone red have been used to decorate the centre of te iriba. Two pinnules in light brown have been curved along the edge of te iriba and secured down with a pinnule of te kakoko. Additionally two layers of off-white burae ni moa have been secured between the woven surfaces upon the front and back of the fan. A slim, cylindrical shape starts from the centre of te iriba and extends outwards to form a handle. The spine of the handle is encased with a plain woven cover of off-white pinnules from te kakoko. The tip has been decorated with a synthetically dyed purple pinnule, the mid section features a bright pink and purple surface decoration and the base end has a black dyed strand threaded through the weave. A small cord of te kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibres) in a mid tone brown have been attached to the base of the handle creating a small loop for hanging te iriba.Wāhi[Gilbert Islands]/[Kiribati]Accession Number1974.147Rā Tāpiringa29 Nov 1974Tohu Tuakiri Kē46620.1 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te iriba; 1974.147; 46620.1; Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1974.147, 46620.1Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaGengeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)Wāhi[Gilbert Islands]/[Kiribati]RāPre 1974Tikanga Waihangawoven [handmade] [handwoven]Waitohu/māka46620.1 (handwritten)Pāohococonut (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibre[coconut leaf]/leaf (plant material)/plant materialfeather/animal materialcoconut leaf midrib/coconut leaf/leaf (plant material)/plant materialRaraunga Ine390mm235mmHuinga KaupapaFibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūFanPersonal Assistive ArtefactsPersonal GearPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua30 Nov 2018 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
